Why Not Create A Stir, A Stink, or a Buzz?
December 15, 2009 at 9:55 am

buzz

You don’t blog simply to speak. You want reactions. Sometimes reactions require making people uncomfortable or touching the emotions. People will spread the word about whatever excites them, enrages them, or moves them.

Not every post on your blog should be argumentative in nature, and you should never reduce a blog post to merely throwing a punch for the sheer shock-value, but when appropriate and in moderation, you should be willing to cross over into the controversial in order to create a stir, a stink, or a buzz. But keep these thoughts in mind.

To Create a Stir, Blog in the Now

You can argue that Prodigy had a much better interface than AOL back in the mid-1990’s, but nobody cares. Talk about things happening in the moment. As a matter of fact, with the advent of real-time news results we have at our finger tips up-to-the-minute coverage of any event or topic in the world.

  • Find at least a dozen news sources from your blog’s niche.
  • Subscribe to their feeds, plus google alerts or Twitter searches for keywords you need to know about.
  • Be the first, or at least in the first ten (or 100, depending on the size of your niche) to break the news.
  • Give your assessment of the news and wait for the reactions.

To Create a Stink, Play Both Sides But Choose Yours

I’m not advocating that you waffle between opinions, but that you anticipate the arguments of both sides and address them in your post ahead of time. You don’t have to write from a defensive posture, and you don’t have to raise every argument. What you can do, however, is give food for thought to both sides of an issue, which encourages discussion and exploration.

To Create a Buzz, Tell the Right People

Get your content in front of those whom you know to be passionate on the subject. I don’t think you should do this for the traffic alone. I think you should do this because we need to be forced to think, to interact, and to explore and we can’t do that hiding safely within the comfort zone of our own niche. Address the right subject in the right way and people will flock to your side to help your cause (or line up to verbally flog you)!

Create a Stir, a Stink, or a Buzz, but Have Some Sense

There are issues we need to be talking about as bloggers within almost every niche. I believe that blogging has the potential to lead us to some helpful conclusions along the way. Having said that though, if you want to get anywhere with your message, you’ll learn to write respectfully, even if argumentatively. Here are a few “don’ts” to remember along the way. You can disagree and be wrong if you want to!

  • Don’t be mean-spirited. Show basic respect.
  • Don’t be culturally insensitive, sexist, or racist. You are not superior.
  • Don’t be profane. Some will insist this isn’t always true, but again, these are my rules, not yours. Profanity always hits me as unprofessional.
  • Don’t close the door to any other argument. Doing so will kill your goal of getting reactions.
  • Don’t belittle people who feel differently. They are not all idiots.
  • Don’t blog about everything, choose your battles wisely.
  • Remember your personal brand along the way – everything you say goes on your unwritten resume, for life.

What do you think? Is it okay to stir the pot sometimes? How far should a blogger go when creating a stink?
